Last week SCRunners.com released their 2017 pre-season outdoor track and field rankings. Four Warriors earned recognition in the pre-season rankings.

Junior school record holder Chelsi Smalls enters the 2017 outdoor season ranked 17th in the state in the 200m dash with a personal-best of 26.53. Chelsi looks to improve on her time and make a strong push for the 100m and 200m state finals in May 2017.

Junior state finalist and school record holder Ahmed Abdallah as well as senior school record holder Carlton Blakely make an appearance in the pre-season top 25 for the 800m. Abdallah enters the 2017 outdoor season ranked 19th in the state in the 800m with a personal-best of 2:07. Blakely enters the 2017 outdoor season ranked 23rd in the state with a personal-best of 2:09. Both Blakely and Abdallah look to break the two-minute mark in the 800m in an effort to compete at the state finals in the open 800m as well as lead their 4 x 800m relay team to state finals appearance. In 2016, the Warrior 4 x 800m relay team won the 3A Region 8 Championship.

Lastly, senior Marquise Stanley enters the 2017 outdoor season as the sole Warrior ranked in two individual events. Stanley is ranked 16th in the 400m with a personal-best of 53.21. Stanley is also ranked 21st in the 200m with a personal-best of 23.23. Stanley looks to improve his time enough to qualify for both individual events as well as the sprint relays (4 x 100m, 4 x 400m)

When asked about the preseason rankings, Coach Casson replied “SCRunners is a great resource for the state. It allows the athletes to progress monitor outside of the feedback we provide as a coaching staff. The rankings give our athletes a sense of how we fare across the state. Ultimately, it’s irresponsible as a coach to put stock in the rankings because there are so many variables to consider when attempting to qualify for the state finals. We recognize it as a source of motivation but nothing more than that. We can’t put the cart before the horse and our team understands that we must earn our way with our performances in April and early May.”
